Novel colorectal drain for anastemosis protection

January - 2012

Polyganics, a company for resorbable soft tissue repair devices and originally founded by PolyVation CEO Theo Flipsen, announced the start of a large clinical trial for their novel C-Seal product. C-Seal is a thin-walled drain that can be used in conjuction with a stapler for the intra-intestinal protection of anastomoses. The clinical study is designed to prove significant reduction of suture leakage after connecting two ends of an intestine.

Intestinal sutures are usally made when part of the intestine has been removed in a surgical procedure for treatment of a tumour of inflammation. A common and serious complication of an intestinal suture is leakage. The contents of the intestine will leak into the abdominal cavity, which could lead to peritonitis. When this happens, it usally does so around five days after the operation. The risk of leakage of intestinal sutures located close to the anus (between 4 and 15 cm) is approximately 11%. Leakage results in a high mortality rate.

C-seal is an unique product of potential high impact that is based on a very novel high-performance polymer.
